Julie Caves is a contemporary artist who has lived in Walthamstow, East London, for over seven years. She works in Walthamstow and Margate.
Julie's studio in the Blackhorse Lane Studios complex, run by the Barbican Arts Group Trust, has open studios each year where visitors can go into the workspaces.
Julie studied art at the University of Texas and Camberwell College of Art in London. She is primarily a painter, though she sometimes makes sculpture when creating site-specific work and makes an artists’ book at least once a year. For the last few years she has been working on a series of small, square oil paintings with titles taken from a list of first names.
Julie explains: “I love paint and the way colours interact with each other. The process of painting is like a story, I don’t know how it’s going to end until the painting and I get there. Sometimes I get lost for a bit but then find my way back to the right path, each decision along the way creates a new strand to the story. These paintings are abstract ideas and thoughts made visible and actual."
